OPTI learn to sail

This program is for students aged 6 to 12, and consists of 4 half-days Monday through Thursday and a full day Friday for two weeks per session. Half days run from 1 pm to 5 pm every weekday, and 9:30am to 5pm on Fridays.

This program covers basic to intermediate level skills required to sail an Optimist dinghy safely, in wind strengths of 8 to 16 km/hr. Applicable CANSail 1 or 2 certification may be awarded upon consistent demonstration of the skills outlined by Sail Canada. Sailors may eventually graduate from this program to the Optimist Race Team or CANSail 3/4 program. Students must be able to swim and provide their own approved personal flotation devices. Please note that students may be reassigned to another program at the discretion of the instructors.

OPTI Race Team

The Opti Race Team is a small program intended for students who want to learn or improve their racing skills. The program is intended for, but not limited to, students who are in levels CANSail 3 and higher. Students must be the right size to sail in an Opti. Sailors at a lower level can also apply to be on the race team but must be approved by the Opti Race Coach. Students in this program are expected to be highly motivated and to put in a high level of effort in daily courses, as well as to participate in regattas throughout the season. Please note that regatta fees are not included in the price of the course. Each student must be able to swim 50 yards, and provide an approved personal flotation device.

CANSail 1&2

This program is an introductory-level course intended for but not limited to students aged 8 to 18. Beginners are introduced to and taught the basic skills of sailing, while returning students hone and perfect these skills. These levels cover safety, seamanship, and boat handling in winds up to 15 km/hr. This course runs from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Mondays to Thursdays, and from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm on Fridays. Sessions run for two weeks. Students sail our fleet of CL 14s and squadron 13s. Each student must be able to swim 50 yards and provide their own approved personal flotation device. Please note that students may be reassigned to another program at the discretion of the instructors.

CANSail 3&4

This is a more advanced program in which sailors are introduced to higher level sailing techniques, such as sail trim, boat tuning, boat maintenance, the trapeze, and use of spinnaker. After completing CANSail 3&4 standards, sailors are competent in winds up to 25 km/hr. Students sail our fleet of Laser IIs and Club 420s. This course is available as a half day or full day program. Sail Canada recommends full day programs and it will significanty increase sailors’ chances at attaining their level certifications. Furthermore, priority for both registration and regatta participation will be given to full time sailors. Each student must be able to swim 50 yards, and provide an approve personal flotation device.

The half day course runs from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Monday to Thursday, as well as 9:30 am to 5:00 pm on Fridays. Sessions run for 4 weeks.

The full day course runs from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Monday to Thursday, as well as 9:30 am to 5:00 pm on Fridays. Sessions run for 4 weeks.

Please note that students may be reassigned to another program at the discretion of the instructors.

 

Optional regattas for CANSail 3&4 students: students will be offered the opportunity to participate in several regattas throughout the season. Regatta participation is either highly encouraged or mandatory for attaining level certifications. The cost of regatta participation, including boat and sailor transportation, food, accommodation and entry fees, is not included in the registration fee. Please note that parents’ participation in the regatta events is essential. For more information, please contact the administrative assistant, or speak with one of the instructors during the sailing season.
